Alexander Tupitsyn: Smooth Billiard
Product Number: 002-622-0035
This is one of the more conservative forms we've received from Alexander Tupitsyn in quite some time, but one we've seen the Russian carver return to time and time again: the classic Danish Billiard. Specifically, it calls to mind those rather filled-out renditions fashioned by the venerable Per and Ulf of S. Bang, especially in terms of the use of visual weight at the heel, the softened, subtly inflated rim, and the neatly-tucked, well-defined transition. Fitting to that comparison, the grain pattern Alexander was able to coax out of this briar is, to quote Shane, "damn near perfect". Indeed; it's nearly impossible to resist being drawn to the striking licks of flame adorning this piece, visible from across the room, and upon closer inspection, the neatly-oriented whorls of birdseye at the rim, top of the shank, and entirety of the underside, all accentuated by a rich contrast stain. Look even closer, and you'll spot subtle rings undulating just beneath the surface of the finish. An absolutely stunning piece.
