Alexander Tupitsyn: Smooth Blowfish
Product Number: 002-622-0074
The Blowfish is a shape that caters well to artistic interpretation, with numerous carvers playing with ridgelines and facets to produce iterations that vary from immensely detailed, "busy" shapes to those more reserved and "simple," allowing the overall form and grain to draw the attention. While those two categories are admittedly broad, this rendition from Alexander Tupitsyn falls into the latter camp. The bulbous shape is informed by a singular ridgeline that runs through the lower right flank of the teardrop shank and up the bowl's fore, terminating at a point in front of the rim.
Tupitsyn is an expert artisan who invests incredible thought and attention to his shaping and construction, and the results are evident in this piece. He's read the grain perfectly — positioning the band of cross grain to the left of the underlying ridgeline, as if the grain is emanating from it, and it leaves dense whorls of birdseye to populate the plump flanks of the bowl. Some versions of the Blowfish accentuate the grain by implementing panels, but Alexander has resisted that urge, instead letting the grain itself define the features of the shape: The flanks aren't separated from the center of the bowl via panels but, rather, are highlighted in the distinction between cross grain and birdseye. Stunning grain, beautiful shaping, and unparalleled engineering combine in this piece, and it's the first Blowfish we've received from the talented Russian artisan.-Truett Smith
