Alexander Tupitsyn: Sandblasted Acorn
Product Number: 002-622-0076
The Acorn shape, when clumsily executed, can be a horror show of a shape. Many pipe forms can be abysmally abused by poor shaping, but few are as irretrievably doomed under those circumstances as the Acorn. Especially disappointing are those examples one sometimes sees at pipe shows of versions trying and failing to be particularly detailed. When done well, they are of course wonders, but too often they fail, because the lines, curves and proportions of the Acorn must be precise, and the more precision is evident, the more sophisticated a bearing the pipe carries.
In the Acorn's simpler renditions, proper design elements are even more essential. Like many mediums and subjects, the simpler and more natural they appear, the harder they were to get that way. And nowhere is that paradox more evident than in a Tupitsyn Acorn. Here, the natural brown stain elevates the woodsy character of the shape, and the briar's natural growth rings and horizontal grain undulate in satisfying sandblasted texture. The piece is all curves, with the necessarily subtle asymmetry of fore and aft curves carrying the implied lines of the bowl to the shank, which is slim and slightly curved to follow through with the forward sweep of the bowl. The upper curvature at the rim is particularly susceptible to just a couple too many swipes with the 400-grit, but Alexander has used appropriate restraint, resulting in an impressive rendition of a delicate shape.- Chuck Stanion
