Alexander Tupitsyn: Smooth Billiard with Silver
Product Number: 002-622-0083
There's something about a classic shape — and the Billiard is as classic as they get — that can become sublime under the skills of a talented carver — and Alexander Tupitsyn is as talented as they get. This is the territory where a couple thousandths of an inch can make a terrific impact. Sand a little too much briar at the transition, or the heel, or the rim, and you have a different pipe. At this level of subtlety, minute variations take on enormous significance.
Alexander doesn't often present a Billiard, but when he does, it attracts the attention of everyone here, because for Tupitsyn, it's never just a Billiard. His particular spin is most often toward the St. Petersburg school, with the work of Grechukhin most influential, and resulting in stockier proportions with Danish lines. This piece, however, is a departure, more traditional in some ways, particularly in regard to the shank and stem combination, which is low, with English shape chart Billiard proportions of stem and bowl height, neatly divided by an elegant wedding band-style, sterling silver ring. But it's in the shape of the bowl that Alexander's precision is most evident. The curve is nearing Egg-shape demeanor, with more subtle curvature than in traditional Billiards. Contributing to that character is the cheeking of the bowl at the transition, curves echoed in the forward heel, which has a bit more substance than is standard. Although presented in slim, Danish proportions, the rim is less fully rounded than is typical of the Danish school, with an interior chamferred ring on the rim for a whisper of concavity.
As for grain and color, the photos do the heavy lifting, but remarkable are the displays of birdseye of the left and right bowl, along with the accompanying contrast-stained horizontal grain fore and aft. For those who appreciate solid, traditional structure, but with deftly executed artistic individualism, this Tupitsyn Billiard must be checking a lot of boxes.- Chuck Stanion
