Alexander Tupitsyn: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-622-0105
One of Russia's most prolific and respected pipe makers, Alexander Tupitsyn boasts a portfolio that includes a number of designs from deft pipe-chart standards to more stylistically creative forms. He was mentored by Vladimir Grechukhin throughout the early years of his career, developing the quality engineering and stem-work standards indicative of an artisan carver, and his design style shares much in common with Grechukhin's — often crafting compact forms of stout proportions and compact dimensions. This bent Dublin fits into that stylistic milieu, exhibiting a muscular nature and robust shaping but with a more subtly angular, hard-lined motif compared to his voluptuously rounded Apple and Tomato renditions.
Defined by a consistent undercurve, the stummel transitions gently through the shank and bowl, the latter's broad, insulating walls flaring consistently into a rim decorated with plateau. Such shaping calls to mind previous bent Dublin renditions we've seen from the Russian carver, but this piece is distinct in its more tight-knit profile and more subdued S-curve, those other renditions more similar to a Calabash's dramatic sinuosity. Furthermore, intriguing asymmetry commends this shape in the form of two flanking ridgelines: The one along the left side runs through the middle of the shank in profile and up the near side of the bowl in a tight curve to the rim, while the right side's ridge sits lower on the shank and extends up the far right side of the bowl, framing the composition's underside in profile. The off-set nature of those ridgelines create a tilted, lens shape to both the rim and shank face, both mirroring each other with accenting plateau. Stunning grain elevates the piece, with flame grain emanating up the sides in a vivid, honey-blonde stain, making for a pipe that's visually alluring and that offers differing aspects to appreciate depending on the angle from which it's observed.-Truett Smith
