Alexander Tupitsyn: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-622-0113
Mentored extensively by Russian great Vladimir Grechukhin and influenced by Danish pipe-making legends, Alexander Tupitsyn has developed both a masterful skill in the craft and his own unique style. This flowing bent Dublin displays his precise shaping with an organic rendition, offering a slightly oblong bowl, and a kiss of natural plateau on the domed and broadly chamfered rim.
The flare of the bowl is exaggerated as it meets the rim, creating a distinctly concave profile that flows naturally with the expansion of the grain, and is mirrored by the expansion ring at the base of one of his hand-cut stems. A seamless transition and supple profile contribute to the liquid appearance, as does the glossy smooth finish and vibrant contrast stain that dress the briar's brilliant flame grain. With pieces like this in his portfolio, I expect Tupitsyn's work to become increasingly expensive, making this perhaps the perfect time to make a move on one of his superlative creations.- Joel Balyeat
