Andreas Bennwik: Smooth Dublin with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-752-0005
Slender and fine bamboo following an even more delicate transition is an impressive thing to pull off. It's also something that can take a good bit of time and practice for the pipemaker to develop real skill at, and that every time will require extra attention and work compared to a briar shank. The briar transition must be shaped just right, the bamboo selected and cut for a natural rhythm with the pipe's shape, and finally a series of dissimilar materials joined together seamlessly and securely. This is why not every Tom, Dick, and Harry makes their living by making beautiful bamboo-lengthened briars.
Andreas Bennwik does know one Tom who does: Tom Eltang, his primary mentor as a pipemaker. I suspect that relationship may have more than a little to do with why Andreas's own work here is so refined. Of course, the teacher can only teach; it's up to the pupil to learn. Andreas has clearly learned.
