Andreas Bennwik: Sandblasted Tomato Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-752-0012
Previously we've seen Tomato shapes from Andreas which seem to favor a more gestural style, often with easy, tapering lines and gentle S-curves in profile. Here, however, Bennwik has given us something a little more streamlined — forgoing those gestural lines for a tighter-knit form with a strong sense of bundled up potential energy. The bowl itself is squat and upright, with a pronounced waistline circumnavigating its midsection. While this style of rounded bowl could've made for a shapely, curvaceous Tomato shape, Andreas instead chose to pair it to an even lower-slung transition and a subtly flaring shank design, topped with a rather modernist looking saddle stem featuring just a touch of downward turn to its button. Taken all together, those individual shaping cues combine to shift the majority of the visual weight to the bowl, with the shank and stem seemingly propelling the form forward. What's more, he's done all that while still keeping the overall form quite diminutive in scale — measuring under four and a half inches from end to end with an overall weight of just over 30 grams.
