Andreas Bennwik: Smooth Bent Dublin Sitter
Product Number: 002-752-0013
Andreas Bennwik has a background in illustration and design, fields that have clearly informed his pipe-making style in regards to line, form, and composition. The Swedish artisan's distinctive approach to those pipe design elements are brilliantly displayed in this bent Dublin interpretation, which also possesses the ability to sit stably upon his flattened base. After looking at the robust proportions I was somewhat stunned to see that this piece could sit unassisted, but Bennwik's keen eye for balance is ably demonstrated in this piece. The bowl dramatically flares from its heel up towards the broad, slightly asymmetric rim, with tight tendrils of flame grain seamlessly following the flaring flanks. The rim's asymmetry is subtle and tastefully executed, while also providing ample surface area to showcases the stunning birdseye that saturates its surface.
The transition is impressively tight, leaving little negative space between the hearty bowl and the stout shank. The shank's upward trajectory is maintained by the mouthpiece, before ending in an incredibly subtle downturn that offers additional balance and comfort for hands-free smoking. Additionally, the stem's single expansion disc offers even more visual interest while the shank's slightly tilted disposition mirrors the bowl's asymmetry. It's a wonderfully cohesive and creative piece from Bennwik, with stunning grain that will stand out in any collection.- Jeffery Sitts
