Andreas Bennwik: Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 002-752-0014
While not as much of a Mecca of artisan pipe making as, say, Denmark, Sweden has produced a number of esteemed carvers over the years — Bo Nordh. Ever heard of him? He studied under a guy named Sixten Ivarsson. Continuing that Swedish tradition is Andreas Bennwik, an artisan carver with a wonderfully eclectic style that puts unique spins on standard shapes. This bent Dublin is one such rendition, offering a compact profile with intricate details in a small package. It's a lesson in contrasting aesthetics, beautifully juxtaposing crisp ridgelines against supple curves: The bowl cants forward on the end of a seamless transition, flaring dramatically upward into a tapered rim. Such a taper, delineated by a ridgeline, calls to mind the Bulldog, and that similarity is continued by the shank's paneling. Andreas flattened the flanks, matching the structured aesthetic of the ridgelined bowl, and the facets' lower ridgeline continues through the heel to emphasize the bowl's cant, adding more accenting rigidity to the composition. In profile, the shank flicks outward suddenly at the end, leading the eye to the stem base's expansion disc, and it's all dressed in a rich, mahogany contrast stain, framing flame grain across the sides and birdseye above and below.-Truett Smith
