Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Gourd with New Guinea Ebony (248) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-720-0009

The gourd referred to by this design's name is, clearly, not the gourd Calabash, but gourd as a whole: a very smoothly rounded inspiration, resulting in a very smoothly rounded pipe. I'm sure you'll be shocked to hear that this shape is very nice in hand, but it is. In fact, I don't particularly want to put it down, and do keep picking it back up between sentences.

That said, in aesthetics it's no slouch either, with a very natural balance between the fullness of the bowl, elongation of the transition, lift of the shank, and slenderness of the saddle bit. The ring grain, as you can see, is plentiful, and I have to say I really like that little, barest hint of a lip Bill added to the forward edge of the very gently curved rim — a small but distinctive detail.
