Bill Shalosky: Smooth Bent Apple with Afzelia Burl (253)
Product Number: 002-720-0011
While a lot of his work can be described as American Industrial, Bill Shalosky also incorporates a number of other influences and cues into his designs. Drawing heavily from his experience in ceramics and sculpture, he simply has a way of dealing with curve — creating rounded forms that seemingly meld to the contours of the palm, always natural and comfortable in hand. This bent Apple is a spectacular example of that attention to curve. Its waistline is broad and set midway up the bowl, lending the overall form a charming sense of plumpness. Yet, in profile, it doesn't come across as visually heavy, due to the the Danish-esque lifting gesture Bill incorporated into the heel and the elongated slope of the aft of the bowl. That latter aspect also allows for more room for the thumb above the transition, making a traditional grip seamless and smooth. Top-notch contrast staining and grain orientation here, as well.
