Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Billiard with Bamboo (372)
Product Number: 002-720-0065
The first noticeable characteristic is the weight. In hand, it feels ridiculous, like it was made of gossamer (whatever that is, but I've been told it's light). A tall Billiard bowl, arguably a Stack, in a very light stain, towers above the transition, which is of smaller proportions than typical. A two-knuckle length of pale bamboo joins the cumberland mouthpiece to the stummel. While the grain is mixed and angled, it's deeply blasted and maintains a secure, tactile aspect in hand. Bill often gravitates to the more plump in his designs, but this sleek number demonstrates that he does not adhere to a single design school. We see influences of Danish and North American carving here, which Bill is himself helping to evolve. Of one other particular note is the flat mouthpiece, which is thin, with a carefully shaped button, and appears to be more comfortable than reasonably expected. Every characteristic is professional, pleasing and creative. There's no losing with this pipe.- Chuck Stanion
