Bill Shalosky: Smooth Bent Egg (426)
Product Number: 002-720-0081
One of the more diminutively proportioned pieces we've come across from Bill Shalosky, this bent Egg combines elements of the Scoop with a strong sense of Danish shaping cues. The former is implied in the rim's concave orientation and bowl's forward-urging posture, while the latter is obvious in the shank's firm, teardrop line, running the length of the lower right side before dissipating into the lower bowl. Full of inherent momentum and a dynamic inclination, marked by smooth lines and supple curves, it's one of Shalosky's more obviously Danish-inspired designs, the shank end attributed an even more implied sense of upward curl thanks to Bill having positioned the mouthpiece slightly lower on the stem base.
That said, however, this piece doesn't stray from the American carver's conventional use of proportions and shaping at the transition — the shank lent some added muscularity to ensure it isn't overshadowed by the bowl and the transition kept gentle and undefined to create the uninterrupted flow from shank end to rim that's so often a defining feature within Bill's work. To top it all off, the grain orientation couldn't be more well placed as bands of cross grain sweep up the flanks, that of the right side seeming to emanate from out of the teardrop ridgeline, while dense pinpricks of birdseye populate the underside and top.-Truett Smith
