Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Fordite (433)
Product Number: 002-720-0082
A natural-stained sibling to an earlier bent Dublin from Bill Shalosky, this piece is indicative of the American carver's signature, muscular style and iconic use of fordite. The overall form is inherently Danish, especially in the Ivarsson style of a teardrop shank. The ridgeline runs along the lower right side and up the bowl, framing the piece's bottom line before dissipating effortlessly into the upper bowl. In profile, said bowl flares dramatically while keeping the line of the heel consistent, but when viewed from above, the flanks are pinched, shaping the rim into an oval that conforms easily to palm. Shalosky has, then, tilted the rim, leaning to the shank's ridgeline when observed from above and lending the form an accented dose of asymmetry. It's all dressed in a natural sandblast, necessitating a choice block of briar, and this one does not disappoint with its beautifully textured striations and dimples of birdseye.
Despite this Danish shaping style, like much of Bill's work, this piece presents a strong American motif. Overall, it's a muscular piece, and the added briar at the shank and transition hints at the American Industrial aesthetic. The use of fordite at the shank end reinforces said American style — the material is the result of paint spray in old American automotive factories, excess paint dripping off of cars, baking in the heat, and building up over time, layer after layer of different colors of paint. Bill is known for incorporating the material in his work, having pioneered the use of fordite in pipemaking, and the specific "motor agate" he uses comes from the Bowling Green, KY plant, which has specialized in assembling Chevrolet Corvettes since 1981. Here, the American carver has fashioned the multi-colored material at the shank end, deftly shaping it to align with the teardrop line and insetting the stem base for a seamless fit.-Truett Smith
