Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Deer Antler (435)
Product Number: 002-720-0084
Readily recognized as the work of Bill Shalosky, this bent Apple exudes the conventional style typically seen when the American carver fashions such a shape. The lifted heel and gentle transition lend the bowl a forward-urging profile, displaying an inherent sleekness while at the same time remaining plump and substantial in hand. This piece is an excellent example of Shalosky's Danish-American style — the stummel marked by soft line and supple curves, devoid of any harshness, yet endowed with a strong sense of muscularity and heartiness about the shank and transition. That juxtaposition is reinforced, then, by the finish and accent material: The form itself is genteel and elegant (though with the aforementioned stoutness), yet the wood-stained sandblast and deer antler accent ring add a decidedly rustic aesthetic in contrast. It's a striking combination of seemingly disparate motifs, yet Bill has merged them effortlessly and coherently in this particularly compact pipe.-Truett Smith
