Bill Shalosky: Rusticated Apple (421)
Product Number: 002-720-0087
Fans of Bill Shalosky's work will recognize that rusticated pipes are not common from the American carver, his portfolio dominated by smooth and sandblasted pieces. However, Bill has recently started to fashion a few rusticated pieces from briar he's had stored in his workshop for over a decade, unsure exactly what to use it for. One such piece is offered here in the form of a classic straight Apple. While the lines and proportions are traditional — the bowl plump in hand and thick-walled — the overall piece is indicative of Bill's typically more muscular design style, offering a fair amount of palm-filling substance while still remaining conveniently compact. The shape is beautiful and alluring in its simplicity, allowing the finish to garner the appropriate attention: Rendered by hand, the rustication consists of minute and consistently applied dimples all across the stummel, each crater catching the light differently to give the impression of a glimmering geode.-Truett Smith
