Bill Shalosky: Smooth Billiard with Boxwood (457)
Product Number: 002-720-0103
Bill Shalosky's straight Billiard renditions are easy to recognize. The American artisan often utilizes rounded design cues and muscular proportions to great effect, the aesthetic exemplifying the minimalist, rotund style often seen throughout American pipe design. In this particular example, Shalosky offers a similar Billiard as this earlier one we received previously; both showcase the hearty shank and tubular bowl that characterize Bill's usual interpretations of the shape chart standard. This piece is perfectly shaped and proportioned too: The tall bowl's forward cant balances the profile, while the shank and stem are arrow straight, and the height of the bowl matches the length of the shank, from the middle of the heel to the base of the stem. At this stem base, Shalosky has accented the palette with boxwood, offering a lighter hue that still remains reserved and natural against the smoky contrast stain of the stummel. Topping the piece off, then, is this briar block's grain — a consistent band of cross grain separating the flanks into dense seas of birdseye. If you're a lover of classic shapes, perfectly executed, or are drawn to gorgeous grain, this is a pipe that delivers on both accounts.-Truett Smith
