Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Bent Apple (454)
Product Number: 002-720-0107
Not your grandfather's bent Apple, this modern rendition from Bill Shalosky riffs off Danish shaping cues. It's particularly noticeable in the undersweep of shank and bowl, and in the shank design, which has a teardrop cross section and crisp ridgeline running along the left side of the shank and moving up into the bowl, where it gradually seems to evaporate. The sandblasted grain is well-oriented around the bowl, the growth rings moderately deep and undulating in natural uniformity. The rim is sandblasted as well, rather than left smooth, diverging from the Danish cues of the overall composition with a sandblasted and subtly concave inner declension toward the tobacco chamber, the chamber itself slightly angled toward the stem to reduce the angle of heat entering the smoke channel and thereby reduce potential damage when inadvertently applying fire to wet dottle, something we all mindlessly do on occasion. In profile, the lines of this piece appear simple, but visual simplicity is often misleading; the more natural the lines, the more complex their execution. Bill is certainly doing work far above his price points, something we should all take note and advantage of.- Chuck Stanion
