Bill Shalosky: Smooth Tomato (467)

Product Number: 002-720-0111

Bill Shalosky's precise and sophisticated shaping style always yields some truly wonderful designs such as this graceful, lithely bent Tomato. It's an organically inclined piece with its soft, natural curves, languid lines, and sense of forward-urging momentum. The bowl displays a squat, low-slung demeanor, effortlessly emerging from the soft transition and ever-so-slightly tapering from its broad, low-set waistline up toward the chamfered rim. The tobacco chamber is somewhat diminutive compared to other pieces we've seen from the American carver, but is expertly engineered to deliver enjoyable sessions no matter what blend is ignited within. The stummel's smoky contrast stain makes the grain even more visually compelling, with streaks of vertical grain cascading down the bowl's flanks and lining the shank's sides, framing whorls of birdseye along the shank's topside and the entire underside of the stummel. It's an appetizing piece, like any good Tomato should be, only this one will remain ripe for many years and is primed for a career of tobacco combustion.
