Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Deer Antler (461) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-720-0115
Despite its visually dominating, muscular elements, this bent Apple from Bill Shalosky exudes a sinuous character with soft curvature throughout its length and breadth. It's a shape that has become something of a signature for Bill, and he continues to experiment with and perfect it. In this sandblasted piece, the texture is medium-deep and the orientation of grain is traditional, with growth rings circling the bowl and stacking up the sides to the rim. Of particular interest is the domed stem base, which echoes the curvature of the stummel for consistency of design, and the two are separated by a single ring of natural antler for understated rustic charm. The cumberland stem offers demure contrast against the all-black of the stummel, accentuated by the accent ring. The transition is somewhat stretched as it joins the sturdy shank with minimal cheeking for an impression of graduation between bowl and shank, that bowl maintaining a compressed nature in a near-Tomato configuration for a composition both practical and impressively precise.
