Bill Shalosky: Partially Sandblasted Volcano (482)
Product Number: 002-720-0120
Guided by consistent curvature, a strongly sweeping shank, and firm ridgelines, this sinuously bent Volcano from Bill Shalosky is a remarkable piece. It's among the most overtly gestural designs I've seen from the American carver, with the bowl nearly curling backward onto the shank. This offering readily demonstrates Bill's precise line work and impeccable ability to render a unique interpretation of a shape while maintaining its fundamental properties. The feature that immediately grabbed my attention on this piece was its dual finish and how Bill utilized the shape's signature shaping elements to coax out a fascinating array of grain in both smooth and sandblasted form.
The Volcano's demarcating ridgeline wraps around the shank and the minimally tapered bowl, dramatically emphasizing the heel's slanted, lifted disposition. That ridgeline also separates the smooth briar of the underside from the sandblasted finish that adorns the rest of the stummel. Smooth briar rides from the shank face along the entire base, dressed in a light stain to highlight the hypnotic array of birdseye that dominates its surface. Above the heel's ridgeline, undulating rings of grain radiate across the stummel underneath a dark crimson contrast stain. It's an undeniably creative piece from one of the most exciting pipe makers in the United States.- Jeffery Sitts
