Bill Shalosky: Sandblasted Oliphant (572) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-720-0164
When asked about what pipes influence his own designs, Bill Shalosky pointed to "every pipe ever made," and it's hard to argue with him when considering the sheer breadth of shapes within his portfolio and the amount of pipe-making experience he has under his belt. Besides fashioning his own artisan pipes, Shalosky is also part of the BriarWorks team, and before that, he cut his teeth as a pipe restorer. He crafts anything from traditional shape-chart standards to more whimsical and playful designs, but his core engineering and stylish finishes are always present.
The Oliphant was originated by Bo Nordh, but like many of the shapes fashioned by the Danish artisan, it's become a popular design for other artisans to replicate and render through their personal creative prism. Shalosky has certainly made the Oliphant his own while staying true to the original shape's dynamic posture and gestural curvature. Horn-like in its build, this piece boasts a tall, forward-canted bowl with a flared rim and swift downward taper. Said taper carries through the elongated transition and slenderizes the shank as it curls upward toward the dramatically uplifted vulcanite mouthpiece. The forward-driving bowl and the upturn of the stem create a visually dynamic profile, with a consistent sweeping arc from the fore to the aft side of the composition. A crisp, dark sandblast dresses the stummel and lends a rugged, scale-like texture to the flanks of the bowl and shank.--Davin Hylton
