Davide Iafisco: Smooth Volcano Tobacco Pipe

The Volcano is, in its own right, quite the dynamic shape — identified by a tall rim, a steep taper, and plenty of extra width to its base. Davide Iafisco has gone a step further with this rendition, however, which is most obvious when viewed from the top; a delightful curling gesture flows through the shank-end, rounding the base of the bowl and into the steady taper to rim, reminding me of the natural spirals of certain seashells. At the underside, too, the detail is just as fine, with the spiral easily visible — as well as just a hint of sanded plateau at the rear, a pinch of texture in an otherwise smooth piece. When combined with Davide's impressive finishing ability, the result is quite stunning, the careful shaping serving to show off all of the vibrant, densely-packed flame grain around the bowl, with a sea of birdseye beneath. Truly excellent work, even among Davide's already-impressive collection.
