Davide Iafisco: Sandblasted Bent Brandy
Product Number: 002-702-0090
Davide Iafisco's bent Brandy renditions readily exemplify the Italian artisan's appreciation for traditional Danish interpretations of classic shapes. Iafisco's work in general is a departure from the bowl-centric, neoclassic forms typically associated with Italian pipemaking, instead favoring supple curves and soft, elegant lines. Those characteristics are certainly evident on this gestural example, the bowl seemingly urging forward from out of the sweeping shank. There's some slight cheeking displayed at the transition, emphasizing the bowl's curvaceousness before the chubby flanks subtly taper up toward the rim.
Further accentuating this piece's Danish aesthetic, Davide has finished the stummel in a light-depth sandblast, coaxing out an abundance of ring grain while maintaining the clean lines of the silhouette and offering some crisp texture to enjoy in hand. While the sandblasted texture is definitely pleasing, it's the small details of this composition that caught my attention. Iafisco has chamfered the innermost portion of the rim, leaving it smooth and staining it a warm chestnut hue to match the broad, flaring shank face. A small kiss of plateau graces the shank's underside, directly underneath the shank face and lends the piece a touch of organicism, seamlessly blending in with the stummel's deep crimson-tinged stain.- Jeffery Sitts
