Davide Iafisco: Sandblasted Tomato
Product Number: 002-702-0091
A broad and plump, yet still dynamic design, this Tomato from Davide Iafisco does well to embody the Italian carver's creative pipe making aesthetic. The overall form utilizes the soft-lined and compact cues often seen in modern Danish and American artisan pipe design, and Iafisco has incorporated his own personal flair and a touch of asymmetry at the shank end and stem base. In silhouette, the shank flares outward, away from the bowl, as is often the case with modern artisan renditions, but Davide has, then, scalloped and slightly tilted the shank face, lending the profile an added sense of forward-urging lines. Within this scalloped face, the mortise is lined with brass, and the stem fits via push-style, mount configuration. Said stem is fashioned from cumberland, the warm, striated hues aligning with the palette of the smooth-polished rim and, thus, incorporating the mouthpiece into the overall composition. Furthermore, Iafisco has shaped the stem base to match perfectly with the asymmetrical orientation of the shank face — as if able to be pushed further, the stem base would line up flush to the briar. A conservative, dark-stained sandblast draws focus to the distinct shank end and stem base, while also allowing the hues of the stem and rim to stand out.-Truett Smith
