Davide Iafisco: Smooth Volcano
Product Number: 002-702-0093
This is a different style of Volcano than others we've received from Davide Iafisco. Previous renditions have been marked by squat and broad proportions, and the shanks notably shaped in a curling, spiraling motif. By contrast, this compact piece displays a sleeker, Horn- or Zulu-like profile — the stem slightly bent and a gradual flare flowing through the mouthpiece and shank and into the bowl. Like traditional Volcano renditions, the bowl here tapers and is separated from the underside by a crisp ridgeline wrapping the base. For added geometry and subtle architectural firmness, the Italian carver fashioned a second, parallel ridgeline just above, creating facets at the shank and stem's flanks before suddenly curling upward and dissipating into the transition. As mentioned before, the profile comes off as sleek and sinuous, but when viewed from above or below, the shank expands to dramatic breadth, allowing for more surface area on which to display dizzying whorls of birdseye across the heel. Flame grain, then, commends the bowl, and it's all dressed in a gorgeous, honey-blonde stain.-Truett Smith
