Davide Iafisco: Smooth Bulldog

Product Number: 002-702-0097

The Bulldog is a shape that's architecturally structured, strongly angular, and beloved by those who appreciate its many attributes. Davide Iafisco, whose name is as associated with creative shaping as it is rife with vowels, has made the shape even more practical here, and with elements that will appeal to those who appreciate curvature and organic shaping in addition to meticulous angular geometry. The stem and shank possess the ridgelines and diamond cross section expected of the shape. However, the lowest angle of that diamond has here been flattened, making that cross section a parallelogram, and also endowing the pipe with the dexterity to sit on its own, most often an impossibility for this shape. At the transition, the ridgelines dissipate into the bowl quickly and without fanfare, with soft but brief curves. An angular forward heel is maintained in profile despite the flattened undercarriage, and from that the bowl rises in an Apple-esque shape of soft curves up to the double bead line, then recurves in to the chamfered rim. Cross-grain orientation places swaths of birdseye at the left and right flanks, with angled flame grain draped across the rim and cascading down the fore and aft sides. It's a modestly sized composition, pocketable and light, and exhibiting an unexpected softness in profile that belies its structural foundation.
