Davide Iafisco: Smooth Pot with Horn
Product Number: 002-702-0106
Davide Iafisco is devoted to his craft and has drawn inspiration from Danish masters like Teddy Knudsen and fellow Italian Claudio Cavicchi, and trained under American artisans Adam Davidson and Jeff Gracik. These influence all show in his work, perhaps the Danish most clearly in this straight Pot, with a softly inflated rim, cheeking at the transition, and overall supple aesthetic.
Davide displays his skill in selecting and reading briar with this piece, giving us a handsome cross grain rendition more than worthy of a smooth finish. An auburn stain accentuates the grain handsomely, bringing out dense birdseye on both flanks and sweeping striations on the fore and aft of the bowl as well as the top and underside of the shank. While appearing to round continually, the heel reaches a curvature close enough to flat to allow the pipe to sit quite stably, which is a pleasant surprise given the supple profile. A sleek, hand-cut saddle stem of vulcanite offers a comfortable draw, while a lithe expansion ring and a pale accent of horn add an additional touch of elegance.- Joel Balyeat
