Doctor's: Smooth Bent Egg with Polymerized Stone
Product Number: 002-630-0032
Compared to the other bent Egg also featured in this batch of Doctor's Pipes, this piece perhaps relies less on the use and exaggeration of the ubiquitous teardrop line. The focus, instead, seems to be on asymmetry — and a very specific type of asymmetry at that. When viewed from the fore of the bowl, you'll notice it immediately. It's that diagonally oriented, almost "drunken" asymmetry we've seen most recently from the likes of Vladimir Grechukhin among others.
The slight inward bevel near the rim along the left flank, together with the smoothly rounded right cheek and the crisp teardrop ridge converging along the left side of the base, create a slightly floral, almost leaning aesthetic. What's perhaps most striking about its function in this piece, however, is its subtlety. Viewed from almost any other angle, it's nearly indiscernible. The silhouette from either flank gives no impression of this asymmetry — instead producing a clean, minimalist sweeping gesture from rim to shank end. It's one of those cases where you really have to hold the pipe in your hand, feel and view it from all angles to truly appreciate its beauty. But let me assure you, when you do, you'll never want to put it down.
