Doctor's: Smooth Calabash with Bamboo and Polymerized Oak
Product Number: 002-630-0055
We've seen all manner of Calabash shapes rendered in briar from carvers the world over, and they often do a fine job of evoking the look of the natural gourd from whence the form came. But Roman Kovalev isn't any ordinary carver, so his rendition seems to stand out. First, the removable cap is made from polymerized oak, and though it appears to be rather subdued, closer inspection reveals this isn't just smooth-polished wood. The polymerization process lends it a shimmering, pearlescent effect, and from one perspective almost seems like you're staring off into space. It's bolstered on all flanks by tight licks of flame, allowing the eye to travel to the playful taper, and subsequently to the unique bamboo shank. Roman's framed the shank with accents of polymerized organics, paired to a neat tapered stem. Beautiful.- Daniel Bumgardner
