Doctor's: Sandblasted Calabash with Bamboo and Dogwood (584) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0066
Though there are certainly more traditionally evocative renditions of the Calabash shape rendered in briar, those of Roman Kovalev are something else entirely. The Russian carver has an acute penchant for playful shaping, and likewise daring accentwork. Indeed, Roman often seems to frame a piece entirely around the accent itself, while also making use of those sorts of implementations that might be overlooked by a less visionary carver.
Here, he opted for a Calabash of eager and active presence, and one that seems to sit squarely in the middle of his body of work, as far as extremeness goes. It's quite playful too, the broad dogwood cap with briar-inset chamber giving way to a tightly-oriented spread of blasted ring-grain traveling entirely around the bowl. Said bowl seems to sprout from the bamboo shank itself, its edge slightly enveloping the stummel about the transition. This threshold is quite gracefully handled, as the undulating honey-blonde stuff seems to guide the eye to briar by way of a gradually slowed-down rhythm to the medium's knuckles. At the opposing end, a sprightly saddle bit makes fine use of negative space, offering balance to the composition in profile. That all being said, you can expect this Double Flash grade to have undoubtedly earned its stamping. Really cool work.- Daniel Bumgardner
