Doctor's: Smooth Dublin with Bamboo and Polymerized Dinosaur Bone (617) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0079
We've seen the underlying form of this bent Dublin from Roman Kovalev before, but as we've come to expect from the carver behind Doctor's Pipes, he doesn't really do things the same way twice. It seems as though the ethos of this piece is charming sleekness, combined with a subtle sense of organic dynamism. This is achieved by way of a kiss of plateau at the rim, along with the compressed, low-profile stretch of bamboo at the shank, which Roman opted to dust with a light sandblast in order to coax out a touch of striated texture.
Reinforcing both that aforementioned sleekness and that sense of organicism, each node of bamboo is faced with a bead of bright polymerized dinosaur bone, shaped into a broad teardrop, the taper of which is directed to the aft, just as a light reinforcement to its sleekness. And as the compressed bamboo is naturally open within, Roman had to fill the negative space with a hard resin, and then drill out the center to line it with briar and brass. This is visible from the shank's end, as Roman has allowed the gentle glimmer of bright metal to remain exposed at the stem's base, complementing the polished shine of dark resin. It's a double flash grade, meaning you can expect quite a marvelous spread of feathery flame and birdseye, too. Beautiful work.- Daniel Bumgardner
