Doctor's: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Bamboo (626) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0080
With one of the most recognizable aesthetics in all of pipemaking, Roman Kovalev's designs often evoke quite an organic disposition, emphasized by the Russian carver's one-of-a-kind use of bamboo. Many artisans, when utilizing bamboo, seek some sort of consistency in the organic medium — whether in the rhythm of the knuckles or the general profile of the ferrule. Kovalev, on the other hand, does the exact opposite, opting for gnarled and imbalanced pieces. Around this asymmetry, though, Roman is able to shape the pipe in such a way as to create a thoroughly unique aesthetic that's seamless and coherent despite the chaotic nature of the bamboo.
In this bent Dublin, Dr. Kovalev has done just that. The splayed, flaring bowl grows like a bulb from out of the rippled and crimped stretch of bamboo. To account for that unevenness, the rim is off-center, sloping down at the fore to expose more of the smooth polished texture as well as accentuating the form's implied momentum. The subtle kisses of plateau there also echo the texture of the bamboo, repeated again at the base of the stem, which has been intricately frilled in unison with the shank-end. A lightweight piece, dressed in a crisp sandblast and marked by deft engineering (apparent especially at the bit and reinforced tenon), this Double Flash grade piece is a hallmark example of Roman's talent and creativity.-Truett Smith
