Doctor's: Sandblasted Bent Ball with Bamboo and Bronze (627) (Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0081
I've noted before that Roman Kovalev may have a knack for naturally unique, organically-inclined feats of shaping, but it's the sheer effortlessness of his work that always seems striking to me. Indeed, the carver produces some of the most individual, visionary compositions in pipedom, making use of a plethora of organic materials, including polymerized dinosaur bone, Japanese mokume gane, mammoth tusk, and some of the most gnarled, alien-looking stretches of bamboo I've personally seen paired to briar. This bent Ball is on the more subtle end of his eclectic style, making use of a slim sliver of polymerized dinosaur bone just past the transition, guiding the eye to the meticulously curling bamboo shank extension, and likewise to the undulating, wavy mortise face. Roman's left the stem base of bright bronze to remain exposed and act as an accent of its own, complementing the dark sandblasted texture of the large rounded bowl with aplomb. A stellar piece.- Daniel Bumgardner
