Doctor's: Smooth Dublin with Bamboo and Boxwood (641) (Double Flash)

Product Number: 002-630-0085

A lesson in balanced asymmetry and organicism — welcome to the work of Roman Kovalev of Doctor's pipes. Here, the Russian carver presents this natural-stained Dublin (which ranks as my personal favorite out of his four pieces in today's update, if you cared to know). The gnarled bamboo at the shank and plateau-kissed rim are certainly admirable and enhance the piece's organic appeal, but what really catches my eye is how Roman has approached each flank of the shank.

On the left side, a divot in the bamboo has been extended into the briar of the transition, creating a more cohesive form while also presenting a unique, accenting touch. At the right flank though, the groove of the left side is traded for a crisp ridgeline that runs horizontally around the bowl's base before dissipating effortlessly into the fore. While each flank differs drastically, they still fit together as the ridge of the right side fits into the negative space left by the left's groove. It's a testament to Roman's impeccable, artistic eye, and this piece doesn't skimp at all in the realm of grain, as the flaring bowl is adorning in a sweeping array of forward-thrusting flame grain.
