Doctor's: Smooth Bent Apple with Bamboo and Boxwood (642) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0086
It's a difficult decision to make, but out of the three new Doctor's pipes from today, I would have to say that this bent Apple just might be my personal favorite. I'm particularly fond of compact briars, and this piece fits the bill nicely, imbued with Roman's eclectic, organic style.
A large, irregular ferrule of bamboo marks the piece, extending the shank into a curvaceous, yet tight-knit S-curve. The organic medium represents Kovalev's conventional use of asymmetric knuckles of bamboo, made more so by the accenting nodes of boxwood which further emphasize the piece's naturalistic disposition. From out of this imbalance, though, the Russian carver still manages to fashion a coherent and consistent design — the stem base canted to align with the shank-end and the small section of shank off-set to continue the implied lines of the bamboo.
From bit to transition, the design's forward-urging momentum terminates, then, in an incredibly plump, perched Apple bowl. There's a generous chamber within, and the in hand feel is sublime. All across the flanks, striking straight grain is highlighted in a warm contrast stain, with the heel kissed with plateau to echo the overall natural aesthetic. Stunning work from Kovalev and sure to be a piece you'll find hard to let go of.-Truett Smith
