Doctor's: Smooth Brandy with Bamboo (660) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0089
On the more understated end of Roman Kovalev's body of work, this Brandy shape seems to be influenced by Danish Neoclassical shaping, at least as far as the bowl's form is concerned. Indeed, it's a remarkably classic form compared to the playful, undeniably unique fare of the Russian carver, juxtaposing substance up front with a slender, naturalesque stretch of bamboo shank and saddle stem. Coupled with this piece's inherently exquisite natural qualities, it certainly benefits from Roman's deft eye for shaping, as it marries the classic with the overtly organic in a practically effortless way.
A recipient of his Double Flash grade (his second highest), this gorgeous fellow sports a lively dance of flame grain on all flanks, bolstered by an underside's worth of birdseye all about the heel, all highlighted by one of the carver's excellent, warm contrast finishes. Roman managed to perfectly match the bamboo's subtle asymmetry at the transition, accenting the liminal space with a thin wafer of polymerized dinosaur bone. Beads of the same adorn the almost oval-shaped bamboo, guiding the eye to a slender slip of a saddle stem. The bamboo shows a subtle hint of blasted texture, and going one further, the Russian carver lent a touch of waviness at the stem's base to counter that of the shank end, fashioning the tenon from high-grade stainless steel. Beautiful work.- Daniel Bumgardner
