Doctor's: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Bamboo and Boxwood (663) (Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0091
With its trumpeting, Horn-like disposition, gesturing forward as if sprouting from the gnarled, idiosyncratic sprig of bamboo at the shank, this bent Dublin readily offers many clues as to its maker. Indeed, Roman Kovalev of Doctor's Pipes makes pieces of a style intrinsically his own, with a varied array of smokers that often seem to be designed and shaped around a piece of external media rather than allowing said media to complement the shape itself. This quad-knuckled stretch of the stuff curls with an intense tenacity, guiding the eye to the broadly flaring, likewise curling bowl, kissed with a touch of plateau at the domed, smooth-stained rim. Roman lent the bamboo an understated sequence of boxwood beads, along with a shank-end of the same, opting to define the threshold of briar and bamboo with a thin wafer of polymerized dinosaur bone. A truly stellar pipe from an undeniably skilled artisan, and certainly deserving of the Russian carver's coveted Flash grade stamp, his third-highest.- Daniel Bumgardner
