Doctor's: Sandblasted Bent Apple with Bamboo and Boxwood (664) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0092
Roman Kovalev seems to enjoy playing with shaping juxtapositions, as he often pairs a broad visual focal point of a bowl with a comparatively slender shank, and often one that's fashioned from an especially idiosyncratic piece of bamboo. The carver selects these unique examples of the stuff specifically, and often they're imbued with a naturally pronounced degree of slope and curve. This serves to throw even more visual weight to the bowl, as it lends the impression of physical weight in profile, like a particularly plump dirigible hanging from a branch.
That being said, he opted for something rather more understated here, and just for good measure, lent the honey-blond stuff at the shank a gentle sandblast. This acts as a means of coaxing the light, striated texture found below, while also allowing his boxwood bead accents to sit in striking relief. The piece is handsomely complemented by a wafer-thin layer of polymerized dinosaur bone between the bamboo and briar, and Roman even lent a minute sense of undulation to the stem base, acting as a visual complement to the shank-end. A comforting, refined piece.- Daniel Bumgardner
