Doctor's: Smooth Dublin with Bamboo and Boxwood (670) (Flash)

Product Number: 002-630-0095

In years surrounding and immediately following WWII, the pipe making world saw a shortage of briar as the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe recovered from years of turmoil. During this shortage, pipe manufacturers used bamboo as a means of saving on briar, fashioning pipes' shanks out of the organic material. It made for a striking, unique aesthetic, but makers thought little about how the shape of the bamboo contributed to the pipe's composition, focusing primarily on practicality and prioritizing straight pieces of bamboo. Sixten Ivarsson, though, shifted this paradigm when he started incorporating bamboo as an element of pipe design in and of itself. Since then, artisans have continued pushing the envelope, utilizing bamboo in a myriad of ways compared to those seen in the 1950s.

Roman Kovalev of Doctor's pipes is especially known for his envelope-pushing, convention-defying approach to bamboo. The Russia-based artisan often uses bamboo so wild, so eccentric that it barely resembles what we typically think of as bamboo. Such is the case with this Dublin. The majority of the shank is comprised of an undulating, uneven section of bamboo, the knuckles asymmetrically oriented and certain nodes accented with boxwood to accentuate the bulbous, organic aesthetic. At the end, the bamboo is curiously frilled, resembling the ruffled cuffs of a Victorian era blouse. Echoing this motif, the stem base is similarly ruffled, cohering the stem and shank into one cohesive design. Elsewhere, the bowl rises tall and proud into an inflated rim. Thick-walled and dominating the visual profile, the bowl is substantial in hand despite the piece's overall compact length, and the flanks are streaked with contrast-stained flame grain, having earned Roman's Flash grade.
