Doctor's: Sandblasted Bent Billiard with Karelian Birch (710) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0101
To say that this bent Billiard with a rectangular shank and karelian birch accent is "reserved and understated" is based solely on Roman Kovalev's portfolio. From most other artisans, this piece would be considered quite adventurous. Doctor's pipes are known to showcase wild materials, inventive shaping, and particular eccentric pieces of bamboo, so this piece's more traditional shaping is actually something of a rarity from Roman. Such a form testifies to Kovalev's skill with classic shapes too, not allowing his wild bamboo pieces to hold him back from beautiful shape chart standards.
That said, while this is a more traditional piece, the Russian carver's creativity is still well displayed. The bowl is slightly tapered above the lifted heel, with the angled transition leading into a paneled shank and slightly bent saddle stem. The shaping of the shank adds a touch of firm rigidity to the profile, contrasting the soft lines and inflated rim of the bowl but echoed by the sandblast's crisp texture and defined ring grain. A contrast stain offers an alluring, reserved aesthetic, with the rim smooth and lighter-stained, and the darker palette draws focus to the pale hue and inky grain pattern of the karelian birch accent.-Truett Smith
