Doctor's: Sandblasted Brandy with Bamboo and Boxwood (764) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0103
Most known for his use of wildly eccentric bamboo sections, Roman Kovalev has consistently pushed the boundaries of what's considered conventional when it comes to pipe-accent work. In this Brandy, though, the Russian carver displays his more reserved, traditional side, having highlighted a more evenly-spaced, uniform piece of bamboo. It still shows subtle asymmetry in its knuckle orientation; however, overall, it's one of Roman's more conservative bamboo accents, catering to those who appreciate more classic bamboo-adorned pipes, yet still recognizable as Kovalev's signature aesthetic.
The use of a less eccentric piece of bamboo does well, then, to draw focus toward the bowl, which is dressed in a stunning sandblast. Perfectly horizontal ring grain stacks up the entire bowl, intersected by vertical striations for a gorgeous texture both visually and in hand. It makes sense that Roman used a less extravagant bamboo accent on this piece, lest it distract from the finishing work, which deserved all the attention. Fans of sandblasted finishes should seriously consider this piece, and the subtle contrast of the stain only brings out the blasted texture even more. This is a compact pipe of bold, striking style, worth consideration by the discerning pipe smoker.-Truett Smith
