Doctor's: Partially Sandblasted Tomato with Bamboo (765) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0104
Roman Kovalev enjoys playing with shaping juxtapositions, often pairing a bowl-centric visual focal point with a comparatively slender shank, and often one that's fashioned from an especially unconventional piece of bamboo. The Russian carver selects these unique examples of the organic material specifically, and often they're imbued with a naturally pronounced degree of slope and curve. This serves to throw even more visual weight to the bowl, as it lends the impression of physical weight in profile, like a particularly plump piece of fruit hanging from a branch.
This Tomato from Kovalev is an excellent representation of those aforementioned characteristics, featuring an irresistibly plump, curvaceous, and broad bowl up front that commands attention. The flanks bulge outward in dramatic fashion before subtly tapering toward the rim, which is quite pronounced and shaped almost like the lip of a vase while its innermost portion is beveled inward to the chamber. A contoured section underneath the stylized rim features sandblasted texture that wraps around in a crescent moon shape when viewed from above. The bowl's smooth portions reveal tight streaks of vertical grain around the flanks and whorls of birdseye along the heel, all highlighted by the warm chestnut stain.
While the bowl's shaping is certainly impressive and noteworthy, the bamboo shank extension on this composition is truly intriguing. The nodes around each knuckle are dramatically pronounced and make their presence known, offering additional texture, both in a visual and physical sense. Even the end of the bamboo is captivating, featuring indentations that wrap around the mortise and are about as close to even as possible when dealing with the organic medium. With all these fascinating features on display, it's easy to overlook that this pipe is surprisingly compact, measuring under four-and-a-half inches in length with the stem's downturn allowing for comfortable hands-free smoking sessions. When examined as a whole, this piece leaves little doubt as to why it received its "Double Flash' stamp, Kovalev's second-highest designation.- Jeffery Sitts
