Doctor's: Smooth Tomato with Bamboo and Boxwood (768) (Double Flash)
Product Number: 002-630-0107
Roman Kovalev enjoys playing with shaping juxtapositions, often pairing a broad, visual focal point of a bowl with a comparatively slender shank, and often one that's extended by an especially idiosyncratic piece of bamboo. The Russian carver selects these unique bamboo sections specifically, and often they're imbued with a naturally pronounced degree of slope and curve. This serves to throw even more visual weight to the bowl, as it lends the impression of physical weight in profile, like a particularly plump piece of fruit hanging from a branch. That said, Kovalev opted for a more understated piece of bamboo on this Tomato rendition, and just for good measure, he accented it further with boxwood, matching the bamboo's hue but transition in a smoother texture as it flares outward toward the stem. The shank-and-stem combination lead sinuously into the voluptuous Tomato bowl, meeting it at quite a defined transition to further the bowl's rotund appeal. The chestnut stain does well to contrast and draw focus to the lighter hues of the bamboo.
