Doctor's: Smooth Billiard with Bamboo and Boxwood (Double Flash) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-630-0120

A connoisseur of careers, Russian artisan Roman Kovalev turned to pipe making with the same ambitions and talent that led him to a successful vocation as a pediatric neurologist, a race car builder and driver, and a distillery owner, among other occupations.

This compact, straight Billiard is emblematic of the carver's finesse in shaping and his progressive use of non-standard materials as an integral part of the composition and as handsome accent. The supple bowl is gently curvaceous, showing a graceful, yet subtle taper toward the softly rounded rim from its plump heel, an indication of Danish influence. Rendered in Nosewarmer form, the shank is mostly composed of nodes of bamboo, a favored medium of the polymath. Kovalev is notable for being a forerunner in the use of the pale material as an important part of the pipe's composition and often employs wild, irregularly shaped bamboo. In this piece, however, there is more consistency, with each nodule concisely spaced and placed. A trim ring of boxwood continues the circular rhythm established by the bamboo, while an expansion ring at the base of the stem does the same.

This Billiard is wearing a warm auburn stain that shows off the stunning, tight-knit tendrils of flame grain that envelops the bowl, complementing the hues of the bamboo extensions. A beautiful piece of briar from one of the globe's leading artisans, it's assigned Doctor's second highest grade, the Double Flash.
