Doctor's: Partially Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Bamboo and Boxwood (Double Flash) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-630-0124
Roman Kovalev is a Russian carver with a particularly unique background. He spent many years as a pediatric neurologist, and during that time, he smoked hundreds of pipes from artisans from around the world. He became obsessed with the artistry and functionality of the craft, paying close attention to how a pipe looked and smoked. With the same ferocity and enthusiasm that led to his success as a race car builder and distillery owner, Kovalev began fashioning pieces under the Doctor's Pipes name, a nod to his previous profession. His work showcases a penchant for organic, soft-featured shapes and the utilization of nontraditional accent materials, such as wildly shaped bamboo and other exotic hardwoods.
Kovalev's immense talent is on full display with this bent Dublin. This piece features a flared, softly inflated rim set above the bowl's elegant taper. The lifted heel and deep curvature of the overall design lend the piece the appearance that its curling in on itself, with a sharply defined cusp at the aft of the rim seemingly driving the bowl backwards towards the upturned shank. The sweeping transition carries momentum into the high-kicking shank that's extended by a rugged section of bamboo. Perhaps no one utilizes bamboo more elegantly and with more precision than Kovalev, and his implementation of the organic material here gives the overall composition a naturalistic texture without distracting from the other aspects of the composition. A disc-like accent of boxwood comprises the shank face and blends perfectly with the bright, warm tones of the bamboo, while an abbreviated saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite tops off the design and makes a subtle downturn. The stummel wears a craggy partial sandblast that accentuates the fetching birdseye across the fore of the bowl, with the rim left smooth and stained a warm mahogany color for a touch of contrast. Lightweight and compact, coming in under five inches in total length, this charming piece is a stellar bit of craftsmanship, and it is clear why Kovalev chose to stamp this piece "Double Flash," his second highest grade.--Davin Hylton
