Emiliano: Smooth Rhodesian with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-946-0019
Emanuel de Queiroz Emiliano started smoking in seminary and was inspired by the pipes of his countrymen to begin carving his own, having since become one of Brazil's most accomplished artisans: drawing from a variety of styles to cultivate a unique, sophisticated portfolio. This Rhodesian is a striking piece, and it's the first of its kind we've seen from the artisan, boasting a striking, yet balanced build that stands out among most other takes on the shape. The transition here is wide, with room enough to drape a digit, and it gives way to a subtly curling, ovoid shank whose vertical compression lends it a varied appearance depending on how it's perceived. A sleek saddle stem of black vulcanite pairs to the shank here, its base accented with a broad band of mammoth and its bit afforded a subdued downturn for a comfortable smoking posture. Up front, a sweeping heel supports the bowl as it grows thick, flaring walls, with the heel itself flowing into the fore wall and informing its impressive expansion. This flare terminates in a pair of crisp beadlines oriented slightly above the walls' high-set waist, and they mark the start of a swift taper to the chamfered rim. An unquestionably Danish-oriented piece, this pipe's sophisticated structure and understated curvature ensures it remains a mainstay in any smoker's rotation, especially for enthusiasts of fine, Danish-style pieces. Dressed in a warm, rich stain, the stummel showcases handsome grain throughout, with flame grain flowing through the shank and around the bowl, while the underside is peppered with birdseye.
