I'm quite fond of pencil-shanked pieces, and this Lovat from Giacomo Penzo uses the technique to great effect. A good bit lengthier than the usual, English-style Lovat, it presents a profile that is crisp and lightweight, the bowl seeming a touch plumper and stouter than it might otherwise. Perhaps more impressive is Penzo's use of strawberry wood as a material, its wild grain pattern offering a touch of rugged sensibility without compromising the shape's lines — suiting its dark finish perfectly. A cumberland stem offers a touch of warmth in its finely-patterned red striations, all while maintaining the piece's clean disposition all around.
