G. Penzo: Smooth Blowfish with Bamboo (Flame) (B)
Product Number: 002-782-0035
The Blowfish isn't a shape I usually associate with Giacomo Penzo. His shaping style lends itself to the form, showing a penchant for Danish-inspired forms and precise linework, but until now, I had not seen a Blowfish from him. And in this piece, what we have is something remarkably different from many of the shapes we've seen in the past.
As a rendition of the blowfish, all of the elements one would hope to see are intact: crisp ridgelines dividing cross-grain from birdseye, and grain patterns that are vivid and well-defined. In whole, the piece also plays with asymmetry, bending softly to the right when viewed from above — not just in bowl or shank, either, but the entire piece making a subtle ebb, as if pulled by a gentle current. It is particularly interesting as a feature, considering the use of a bamboo shank extension, which must have been carefully chosen to pair with the bowl to achieve such a sense of motion. Not only that, but the bamboo sports a fine rhythm to its knuckles, with six of them evenly spaced along its length. The stem, too, maintains the sideways-ebbing motion of the rest of the piece, carved to match even as its salmon coloring provides a pop of color to the overall palette. Quite the impressive piece from Giacomo.- Rachel DuBose
